California's Lightweight Crew was begun in 1970-71 by Martin McNair, the men's head coach. Already established on the east coast, Cal joined Washington, UC Santa Barbara and UCLA among the earliest programs on the west coast. The team experienced success the following year, sporting a 6-2 record in their first full year of racing. They rose rapidly to even greater success, winning the Western Sprints in 1975. Although they have experienced both ups and downs in the years since, each crew maintained the original commitment to excellence and speed on the water.

The first decade of the 21st century has seen significant growth in the size and generosity of the Cal Lightweight Alumni Group. Collectively, we realized that excellent coaching, hard work on the water and erg, and outstanding competition can only go so far. In addition, we need to create a level of financial stability to insure growing success for years to come. If you're a Cal Lightweight Alum, please continue your generosity when we inquire about your contribution to the Martz endowment fund.

Just as important as speed and stability is the retrieval of the history of the Cal Lightweights. Please look through your shoeboxes, hard drives and memories and send us whatever you can that will help us to write this history. We will return any papers and photos that you send to us.

Go Bears!
